Turenscape Academy, established in 2016 by Dr. Kongjian Yu, integrates the visionary practices of ecological and urban design with education. As the founder of Turenscape and an esteemed academic with a Ph.D. from Harvard Graduate School of Design, Dr. Yu has played a pivotal role in shaping modern landscape architecture and urbanism in China. His groundbreaking work on Ecological Security Patterns and Sponge Cities has significantly influenced China’s approach to urban ecological restoration and sustainable land use planning. Guided by the visionary leadership of Dr. Yu for more than 25 years, Turenscape has profoundly shaped the landscape of over 1,000 projects in upwards of 250 cities globally. Our dedication to innovation, cultural respect, and environmental stewardship has earned us a distinguished collection of over 100 international accolades. Highlights of our recognition include 14 ASLA Excellence and Honor Awards, 8 WAF Awards, 5 AZ Awards, the Holcim Awards, ULI Excellence Award, and the esteemed Cooper Hewitt National Design Award. Turenscape Academy serves as the educational branch of Turenscape, offering a unique platform for training in sustainable design across architecture, landscape architecture, urbanism, and art & design. It caters to students, professionals, and ecologists facing the challenges of rapid urbanization, emphasizing an interdisciplinary approach that incorporates environmental, social, and cultural sustainability into the design of buildings, landscapes, and cities. The academy’s mission revolves around providing multi-level, interdisciplinary training that prepares its participants to effectively address urbanization challenges. By fostering an integrated design approach, Turenscape Academy encourages the exploration of environmental dynamics, agricultural practices, rural ecology, and cultural sociology, amongst other disciplines. It positions itself as a dynamic studio-based model of education, offering an innovative alternative to conventional design education methodologies. Philosophically, Turenscape Academy advocates for the ‘Learning-by-Doing’ approach, promoting an immersive educational experience that marries theory with practical application. This philosophy is designed to spur creativity and direct engagement with urban challenges, facilitating a rich learning environment that encourages continuous, lifelong learning. The academy is dedicated to fostering an open, collaborative atmosphere through partnerships with exploratory studios, research organizations, and professional and educational institutions worldwide, aiming to catalyze dialogue and knowledge dissemination across various platforms including symposiums, workshops, publications, and exhibitions.
