LWCircus-MayaLab019|Celestun Biosphere Reserve, Yucatan (Mx)
The experiential workshop, based on research on field, looking for operative sharing methods in collaboration with local communities and their relation and cohabitation with environmentally sensitive areas, investigates among shared practices, looking for devices able to give life to long term process in term of sustainable development for local communities interested. It will represent an excellent opportunity for students that are looking for learning through a different way and methodology in redesign and valorize the cultural and sensitive landscapes, collaborating with different kind of practitioners ( as artists, performers, architects, landscape architects, anthropologists, ethnographers, sound designers or film directors) and the people from the local communities from multiple backgrounds and learning styles to gain mutually beneficial goals, permitting the achievement of results in terms of enrichment that benefit all actors involved in the experience.
The workshop setting will be inside the Celestun Biosphere Reserve, in the north West Coast of Yucatan Peninsula, as well as the main topic will be on the shared design practices strategies in collaboration with the locals looking for the Reserve’s preservation and its cultural landscape revaluation. The students will start in researching and testing with alternative method working together with the Mayan cultural minorities living in the Celestun’s village, having the opportunity to live a full immersed experience on field, working with locals on the topic of the sustainable rural development inside the sensitive area, where at the moment the Mayan minorities are pressing on the natural system’s carrying capacity through a beginning of some informal uncontrolled rural developments on the Celestun River, causing a possible future high risk of pollution, that could affect seriously the Natural Area system. The main purpose of the workshop on site is to encourage the students in using their knowledges so far acquired together with alternative attitudes, as the anthropological survey and the shared design process with the inhabitants, thanks to a full exchange of ancient knowledges and ancestral cultural backgrounds, to arrive together with the local Mayan population to embrace a responsible development cycle through the rediscover of the sense of the place, being the process finalized to a re-appropriation of local traditional way of producing and of reuse, as a plausible option of a proper sustainable recycling cycle. The aim will be pursued focusing on the investigation around the shared practices, through the involvement of multicultural and multi-disciplinary attitudes, looking for devices able to give life to long term process in term of sustainable development for the local communities, that will be directly interested along the entire workshop’s path, from the survey phase till the final operative phase.
The intensive “work on field” workshop, thanks to the “full immersion” formula, will give opportunity to the students, under the guide of the professors, by collaborating directly with the minorities on site and local experts in environmental preserving strategies and local cultural preservation, to acquire precious know-how and alternative attitudes (operative shared practices) in the redesigning and valorizing cultural landscapes inside the anthropized and natural sensitive context. All the main phases that articulated the workshop, will be shared with the minorities that live the places, then verified and restituted on site, the results will be shared through common presentations and open to external colleagues that will be invited as guests critics. The main sensitive points and questions to be sort out, resulting as base for the future installations on site, will concern facilities for open spaces, infrastructures and others micro interventions realized rigorously through the recycle of existing naturals elements or waste materials found on site.
Attending the operative workshop, the participants will have the excellent opportunity not only to shared with the local community the realization phase, but as well to share it with the rest of a multi disciplinary and multicultural creative community involved on the LWCircus-MayaLab019. By experiencing a temporary meeting of different cultures, way of thinking, different languages, way of work and approaching the situations and by applying and reinforcing their personal and acquired attitudes in resolving even critic situations, the students, through encouragement of the dialogue between the others, they will use the listening approach and the creative way in solving the problems, fielding also a strongly resolute and fast decision making’s approach.
